About
A jack of all marketing trades, and a master of two
I’ve spent my career working on marketing, branding and communications projects, both in-house and in various roles within a creative agency. As a freelancer, I now get to spend every day doing the type of work that I love the most: copywriting and verbal brand identity.
I also know many talented designers, planners, videographers, web developers and marketing consultants who I jump at the chance to work with whenever needed.
How I work
I try to approach my work in a way that keeps me efficient and focused, but I'd be lying to both of us if I didn’t admit that, despite my best intentions, sometimes I fall into an internet black hole. The sunniest places in the world to live! How to do a ski season with a child! Lion’s Mane mushroom benefits!
Time blocking. I batch my work so that similar tasks are done together, at the most effective time. Ideally, I like to do research one day, write on a separate day and carry out edits on another day.
Turning off the tech. I avoid taking my phone into the office so that I’m not distracted by it. When this panics me, I remind myself that people managed to work perfectly well in the nineties.
Making it about more than me. I have built charity support into my business since day one. In the 2023/24 business year, I donated 2% of profits to Médecins San Frontières, and donated my time to help a local charity improve their branding and marketing.
Scheduled breaks. As well as blocking out time in which to work, I block out decent breaks, too. Of course, there are busy times and emergency jobs, which I always try to accommodate, but I don’t think it’s possible to produce excellent work, week in, week out, if you don’t allow yourself time away from the screen. If you pay me to do eight hours of work, I’m unlikely to be doing that in a single day - and I like to think the outputs are all the better for it.
Time outside. I try to get outdoors every day. It’s harder than it sounds to find the motivation to do this, despite having beautiful places on my doorstep. A work in progress.
Qualifications
I have a few bits of paper if you’re into that:

-
Certificate in Digital Marketing from Squared Online, who worked with Google to develop the course content
-
CIM Diploma in Marketing Communication
-
CIPR award in Internal Communications
-
BA (Hons) International Business and Modern Languages from the University of Strathclyde.
When I’m not working
A bit more about me
I play the piano in a covers band and on my own. I love mountain biking, cold water dipping and being outside generally, preferably with pals and in the sunshine. I try to stay fit enough to enjoy these things by going to CrossFit. In winter I ski when weekends align with snow and no gales - it's Scotland, so this is rare. I also love spending time with my husband, Kev, and seven-year-old son, Brodie, and whenever possible we’ll set off in our campervan to do all of the above or just hang out, drink coffee and eat good food in a new place.

I'm also on the board of a brilliant charity, Community Connexions, which aims to improve the lives and wellbeing of people in our community, allowing them to remain independent for longer.
